Makawao Paint Out Invitational.

Viewpoints gallery has taken the Makawao Paint Out to a whole new level. This week long event will allow the public to enjoy the beauty of Upcountry with a group of 20 accomplished plein air painters as they record a stunning collection of Upcountry locations.

Plein Air is the art of painting outside in the landscape.

From June 29th through July 6th there will be 9 free events that are open to the public. Highlights include a Kick Off Party at Tedeschi Winery on Sunday, June 29th. Starting at 9am you can stroll the grounds and watch painting created right before your very eyes.
A very special event will be at the private gardens of Janet and George Allan Tuesday, July 1st starting at 8am. George is one of the most well known and respected plein air painters on the island and his gardens are full of breathtaking views. Plus George is always open to giving painting tips and inspiring others to be creative.
On Saturday July 5th while watching the Rodeo Parade look for the artists involved in the Quick Draw. Artists only have a few hours starting at 9am to complete their paintings.

Many of the paintings completed during the week will be on view during the opening reception Saturday July 5th at 5pm. The show runs till July 9th.

Finding Ways to Connect into Artist Programs

There are several artists programs where artists can display and sell their work here on Maui. I do not know how to get into them all but I can help you start your search.
Here is a list of a few that could help new and experienced artists:

Under the Banyan Tree in Lahaina is a good place to begin. Although the Lahaina Art Society does not have many weekend days anymore you can still meet artists and start working on your sales and display. They juried in monthly. For more information call 808-661-0111

The Kea Lani has a program several days a week. I believe concierge handles the program so that would be a good place to start. 808-875-4100

The person to contact at the Grand Wailea could be Norma Andrade. She is in marketing and I believe is the current coordinator of the program. 808- 875-1234

The Four Seasons is changing the managers of their program so there is nobody to currently contact. They usually start looking for a few new people in late summer or early fall for the next year. The staff at the Selections Store is where you want to start. 808-874-8000

On Thursdays the Loyd's started a program called Everything Made on Maui in North Kihei and you can contact Kathy for more information loydk001@hawaii.rr.com

Clay Maui's Summer Schedule

Clay Maui Art Center is the newest place to take classes on the island. There is a large selection of classes for both youth and adults in a variety of mediums. I applaud Stacey Guinan and Carolyn Eddins for taking a chance and putting together a much needed place for the arts on the Southside of the Island. Here is Clay Maui's Summer Schedule.

What fun! Free Events at the Maui Film Festival.

It is mid June and that means it is time for the Maui Film Festival. From June 11^th through the 15^th the island will be full of stars and movies in many venues.

Did you know there are many free events to enjoy. That’s right FREE. Look for films at these three venues Starlight Cinema, SandDance Theater and Phoebe in Wonderland a Special Event at the Sky Dome Theater.

On June 11^th at 8pm come to the Starlight Cinema to enjoy a night under the stars at Mokapu Beach in front of the new Baccarat. The night starts with Humpback Code a breathtaking documentary which unravels some of the mystery of the social life of the Hawaiian Humpback Whales. Then enjoy a live tour of the cosmos with Maui’s Harriet Witt an expert in astronomy, Polynesian celestial folklore. End the night with Hawaiian Starlight outstanding true color images from the summit of Mauna Kea.

On June 12^th, 13^th , 14^th and 15^th at 8pm the SandDance Theater on Wailea Beach will host free events. On the 12^th families can enjoy a night out under the stars watching the Little Mermaid. The 14^th you can watch Explore! A shorts showcase that takes you from Hawaiian Surfing to India and China. And the 15^th features the Live Earth Showcase with shorts about global warming and the environment. Don’t worry there are a few with a twist of humor.

The most anticipated of free events will be June 13^th at the Skydome Theater at the Wailea Beach Marriott. At 8pm enjoy Phoebe in Wonderland the newest film featuring Felicity Huffman. The film stars Elle Fanning as a little girl who won't, or can't, follow the rules and seeks enlightenment from her unconventional drama teacher.

Felicity Huffman will be one of the movie stars receiving awards at the film festival so chances are you will be able to spot her at this event.

Places to Sell Jewelry on Maui

I received an email from a jeweler asking where are good places to contact to sell handmade jewelery on Maui. Here are a few places off the top of my head.

Maui Hands with several locations on the island, Panna Spears runs stores with many types of jewelry. I have heard the jewelry sales are brisk plus she pays on time. Always important.

Artsy is a new gallery in Kihei so I know they are looking for innovative work. Hard to find but they are working on good signage and advertising. www.ArtsyMaui.com

Haleakala Trading Company. Can not say enough nice things about Harry and his long running shop of Maui art in Kihei. He has a large jewelry display and works the store himself many days a week. He is good with inventory and payments. (808) 879-8700

Four Seasons Breezes The woman's boutique at the Four Seasons has a selection of high end eclectic jewelry. They are bringing in a new buyer so it might be difficult at this time to find someone with the power to buy new items. (808) 874-8000 ask for Breezes

Join the Blessing for A New Jewelry Studio for Everybody to Love

It was delightful to see JB Rea's warm smile as he showed off the Hui Noeau's new jewelry studio. It is a nice move from a leaky, dark and cramped pantry behind the kitchen. This dedicated teacher and master jeweler, now has a spacious full functioning space to teach and marvel at the view.

Each student will have workstations with torchs, good lighting and ventilation. Plus there are special areas for casting, enameling, stone and cutting edge work like hydrolic forming. The studio is light and airy with incredible views from every direction. JB rattled off a list of a dozen types of classes they will have to offer and heaped praise on the other teachers that have joined him over the last several years, Julie Matheis and Jaisy Hanlon.

It took over 5 years to complete the studio. JB was ecstatic about the many people that made this possible include its namesakes Ginny and Art McCoy and Gage Schubert, an unwavering patron of the arts on the island.

Two New Places for the Arts in Kihei

Artsy a new gallery in Kihei has its grand opening tonight May 16th from 5 to 8pm. The gallery has an eclectic mix of painting, fine craft and jewelry. This place is hard to find! It is in the back of the Rainbow Mall in the small building to the Northside.

Artists include: Sue Bailey, Kanoe Clark, Stephanie Clifton, Stephen Fellerman, Jeanette Hablewitz, Jasmine Judson, Maury King, Lisa Lappe, Leslie Le Cornu, Nichola Moss, Michael Neal, Kevin Omuro, Glenna Rand, Jennifer Stephens, Jefferson Stillwell, Sumeria and Sarah Weise

Clay Maui Art Center is also difficult to find but will surely be a new treasure for the Maui art community. Ceramic artist, Stacey Guinan has teamed up with Carolyn Eddins to create a space for art classes on the Southside. Classes will be taught through out the day for students of all ages. Specializing in clay and they have attracted a talented group of teachers including Maui favorite, Jennifer Owens. In the future they plan to expand and have drawing and painting classes.

Clay Maui has also put together a small art supply store with ceramic supplies you can not get anywhere else on the island. Plus, a lovely little gallery space greets you at the entrance. It is filled with some of the finest ceramics on the island at very reasonable prices.

Clay Maui Art Center is more than off the beaten path. Behind Tesoro on the Piilani Highway is the new Kihei Commercial Plaza. It is on the southside of the complex at 330 Ohukai Road Suite A105 (808) 874-2787

Warning Sticking Your Hand in My Fridge Could Make it Green

I received an email this week from a novice painter who enjoyed my "How to Paint a Sunset Videos". (www.mauiartscene.com) After he is finished painting for the day he is left with extra paint on his palette that he does not want to waste. Is there anything that can be done to save the paint?

The answer is YES if you are painting in oils. At the end of the day you can put your palette and brushes in the freezer and they will not dry! Being lazy I wrap my brushes in a wet paper towel, then put them in a plastic bag and stick them in the freezer. I put the palette in an empty area.

Now remember if you share your refrigerator with others make sure you make your own spot away from food and let them know. There is nothing my husband hates more than sticking his hand in the refrigerator and getting a handful of paint with his chocolate!
